Week 3 Continued

I've fallen a bit behind. Attending the ear piercing shrieks at the Hannah Montana concert will do that to a person. So...Where was I? I'll just post a laurieesque summary:

Tuesday 1/8
Run 30 minutes
Dance and scream with Hannah and the Jonas brothers...didn't last long as I was,
"LIKE...TOTALLY EMBARRASSING!" to my daughter and nieces, so I was relegated to sitting quietly with the rest of the newly deaf old folks

Wednesday 1/9
Spin 60
Yoga 30
Walk 60

Thursday 1/10
Cardio 15
Barbell Class 60
Swim 50

Friday
Spin 60
Run 40

Saturday
Rode outside with MMTC 120 Hooray! Felt better than last week, but was still sucking wind on the way out. I felt better on the way back...thinking I was doing an awesome negative split...until Donnie had to burst my bubble and inform me, "It's way easier on the way back." I might not drive with that guy anymore.

Week 3

Saturday 1/5/08
Bike 2 hours outside!

Yeah! Pretended to be hard core biker-chick and put on new neoprene booties, 3 layers, and kids' ski mittens. Donnie, Laurie, and I met up with the 10 other MMTC group and rode out to Western Howard County from Hollifield Station. I was able to stay in zone 2 (OK so I only managed this if we were going down a very long hill) and vacillated between feeling like "Yes, I can do this!" and "Holy shit, get me off this bike, I can't keep up!" Halfway through the ride I ditched the mittens as my hands appeared to be on fire. I put regular riding gloves on and was pleasantly surprised how, temperature-wise, I was comfortable. Being a dork, I took photos of this historic occasion, since most of the IMLP training group was there. I'm sure the MMTC group was happy to have such high-maintenance riders. I thought it was important to document it, in case I wimped out and never made it back to a group ride....now at least I have proof. I was there and rode with a group, in JANUARY!

My post-workout cool down was to ride to NYC with college friends and stay out 'til 2 am partying like rock stars. The 5 hour drive was OK, except when we got to the city and I actually had to turn the steering wheel. My arms were still in pain, pathetically, from the barbell class on Thursday!

Sunday 1/6/08
Swam 1 hour!

Yeah again! This is pretty much the longest I have ever swam continuously. I was DREADING it, exhausted from my middle-aged-women gone wild weekend. I didn't warm up, just started swimming once the "postal swim" began. It was great to be in the end lane, no pressure to look around at everyone lapping me and I could see the clock as I turned...though I closed my eyes at times to make the time seem to go by faster. I shared a lane with Abby and really enjoyed it...which was a complete shock! I honestly had low expectations, didn't think I could swim the whole thing continuously, and thought I'd incorporate some breastroke. I didn't count any laps, just thought of different songs in my head and went through all the lyrics, passing the time and taking it easy. Some popular favorites that seemed to enter my mind were anything Pat Benetar and Train, as well as some show tunes...Wicked, Hairspray and don't ask me....Annie. Before I knew it....3485 yrds! So, I shouldn't have stopped to re-adjust/clear the goggles and I could have had a 3500 even. Overall I was very pleasantly surprised and my arms were not the least bit sore today.

Monday 1/7/08
Spin 1 hour
Core Class From Hell 30 minutes
Food:
Bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios
Granola Bar
Milk

Lifetime began their new and improved class schedule. Just when I was enjoying the 45 min spin/45 min yoga...they change it! The spinning was fine, though I was being a little bit of a slacker, trying to keep my HR down. The core class was painful. What I lack in strength though, I made up for with gracefulness, as my giant stability ball went shooting out from under me and I crashed to the ground. The instructor said she was impressed that the class could maintain that exercise so well. Lucky for me, I was in the back corner and didn't ruin the class' reputation.

January 4, 2008

OK, so Wed. didn't go exactly as planned. Still suffering from post-holiday stress syndrome and felt the need to pack up any item related to Christmas. Exchanged bike-run work out for bulb packing-tree hauling. I figure it's more of an upper body workout, but burned an equal number of calories.

Thursday: After attempting above upper body workout, decided I need strength training. Went to the "barbell" class at Lifetime. I did 15 min of cardio on the eliptical and then 1 hour of pumping (arms quivering with 5 lb weights) iron. It was a humbling experience.

Took my dog for a power walk around the block...which includes Ilchester hill, so I felt like I had reached my lunge quota for the day. It's depressing to get into an anaerobic zone while walking.

Topped off the workout with a 2008 return to swimming. Ran my mouth and missed the warm-up, but probably swam 45 minutes. Again, finished out the day the same humbling, painful way I started. Basebuiding is hard.

Friday:
Ran 1 hour and 45 minutes. Tried to stay in zone 2, but as soon as I started putting one foot in front of the other on an incline higher than 2 degrees, I blew it. Did better with eating, still trying to wean myself from leftover holiday goodies. Will hopefully be able to post less-embarrassing food choices next week.

January 1, 2008

Even though our "official" training started last week, it's taken me a while to get my blog bearings to post...so Lauire's already beating me...again. Thanks to Donnie, we're following the 30 week "Competitive Program" from Don Fink's book, be Iron fit. Last week it called for a total of 6 hours: 2 for swimming, 2 biking and 2 running. We did zero swimming, but managed to bike/spin and get the running in. Hmm, totally modifying the program the first week...so much for discipline.

Week 2

Monday: Spin 45 min. Yoga 45 min.

Tuesday: "Rest" Day-"Rest" consisted of entertaining 35 people culminating in throwing massive quantities of confetti at midnight. This was followed by loosing electricity for an hour and a half (apparently the adults cue to go home, leaving all their children for a cozy 14 kid sleepover.) "Rest" continued as we cleaned up by candlelight, finally got power back, vacuumed 'til 3 am, and then made a leisurely breakfast of bacon and eggs with our brewd of houseguests.

Rest is clearly overrated, so Laurie and I hit the road for a 17 mile bike ride. Keith continued true Iron Dunnigan training and tackled the kitchen, vacuumed 6 more times, played Uno, Risk, and threw lunch meat at any kids who mentioned lunch. OK, I'm digressing...but I think the day speaks volumes for the "motivation" aspect of training.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a 30 min. bike, followed by 15 min. run. I'll try to get better about not rambling, getting off topic, and just posting the workout and nutrition. For the cold hard facts without the annoying fluff go to Laurie's blog http://reluctantblogger-laurie.blogspot.com/

Happy New Year!
